Carmen Albu, marketing strategist and Fractional CMO, explains why marketing should be treated as a predictable system focused on ROI, and how Lean principles can transform marketing from a cost center into a decision-making tool.

In an industry where marketing is often associated with intuition, spontaneous creativity, and budgets adjusted “on the fly,” Carmen Albu speaks about a different reality: marketing as a system. A system built on data, clear processes, and real accountability for results.

With over 17 years of experience in marketing, communication, and management, Carmen spent nearly five years in an environment that fundamentally reshaped her professional perspective: companies guided by Lean and Kaizen principles. There, efficiency wasn’t a slogan—it was a daily discipline. Processes were constantly analyzed, measured, and optimized, and performance was non-negotiable.

This exposure made her see the gap between how high-performing organizations operate and the way marketing is often treated. “A lot of effort, many campaigns, many tools, but very little clarity,” is the pattern she would later recognize in numerous companies.

The Challenges of Transitioning to Fractional Leadership

The year 2020 was a turning point. While trying to build a marketing and automation project with European funds—alongside a full-time job and the challenges of being a new mother—Carmen realized an uncomfortable truth: you can’t build a healthy business in the gaps between meetings. You can’t create solid systems when your energy and attention are fragmented.

A few years of returning to traditional management roles followed, along with accumulating professional frustration. Marketing remained caught between reactive decisions and choices made under pressure, without a real framework for measurement and optimization. The transition to entrepreneurship and the fractional model was not, as is often assumed, about freedom—it was about control and rigor.

Today, in her role as a Fractional CMO, Carmen Albu works directly with founders, CEOs, and boards to build predictable marketing systems focused on ROI and strategic decision-making. Interactions are short, clear, and impact-driven. Not volume-driven. Not noise-driven.

Challenges remain: fragmented budgets, unintegrated CRMs, tools used chaotically, and overworked teams. Yet the approach stays the same: before doing more, you must know what to stop doing. What consumes time, money, and energy without producing real value.

One of the most relevant examples of her impact comes from a company that consistently invested significant sums in marketing without being able to link costs to results. No tracking, no correlation between leads and sales, and a disproportionate focus on awareness. Through auditing, prioritization, and reallocating budgets to profitable channels, marketing shifted from a cost center to a decision-making tool. The major gain was not just financial but strategic: control.

Fractional vs. Full-Time: Clarity and Accountability

The difference between a full-time executive and a fractional one, Carmen says, is simple. Full-time, you’re trapped in the system. Fractional, you fix the system. There’s no luxury of hiding in operations or postponing decisions. Results are the only metric that matters.

For skeptical CEOs, the message is direct: a fractional executive does not come to consume budget—they come to stop waste. It’s a form of senior leadership that is tested, flexible, without the rigidity of a permanent role, yet carries full responsibility.

The Fractional Future: More Than a Trend

Looking ahead, Carmen does not see the fractional model as a trend, but as a natural adaptation to today’s reality. In a world where execution is increasingly automated by AI, value lies in strategic thinking, context, and decision-making. Companies will no longer buy time—they will buy clarity.

And for senior professionals considering this path, her advice is clear: fractional does not mean easier. It means more deliberate. More accountable. And perhaps, more honest about your own impact.

Discover Alexandru Negrea’s vision on content, communication, and personal branding in an exclusive interview by Careers & Business magazine.

Alexandru Negrea has been working in online marketing for almost 20 years, building and selling digital products and services for entrepreneurs, companies, and agencies under the name Social Smarts. For the past few years, he has also been a partner in an audio-video production business – Saga Space.

C&B: Looking at the narrative thread of your career or business, what were the key moments that defined you?
Alexandru Negrea: I was quite inspired when Facebook appeared online, and I capitalized on the idea that every company should have a presence on this platform, which brought me significant visibility in a relatively short time. Later, I built the first Facebook marketing and communication course in Romania, with nearly 5,000 graduates today in all its formats (online, offline, live, or pre-recorded). As is often the case, consistency was the most important key in this whole story.

C&B: What has been the most difficult moment in your journey so far, and how did you overcome it?
Alexandru Negrea: The beginning of the pandemic was the most difficult moment because Social Smarts relied exclusively on in-person meetings with clients and students, but we adapted relatively quickly and launched some online courses that kept us afloat. Nothing spectacular in the negative or positive sense. Paradoxically, that tough moment for Social Smarts turned out to be a good time to start another business with two partners – a studio for podcasts and video production in general – Saga Space.

C&B: Is there a dream or ambition that has always guided you, regardless of obstacles?
Alexandru Negrea: No, nothing like that – it’s a choice I made many years ago: to try out a few entrepreneurial projects instead of getting a job somewhere, without building a spectacular story around that decision.

C&B: What were you like at the beginning of your journey, and how do you feel you’ve changed over time?
Alexandru Negrea: I was irresponsible at the beginning, ignorant, concerned with things that seem unimportant now. Over time, things changed – in the sense that now I think twice when making a decision because I know I can still be irresponsible and ignorant. Let’s say some wisdom and patience have been added along the way, helping me see things more clearly.

C&B: If we were to meet your team or collaborators, what do you think they would say about you?
Alexandru Negrea: There are people I worked very well with and people I didn’t get along with, so opinions would probably be mixed – but I don’t see anything spectacular about that, just a normal path. In the services industry, it’s hard to stay friends with everyone, especially if you’re not willing to make compromises.

C&B: What is the most important decision you’ve made that changed your trajectory?
Alexandru Negrea: I don’t have one.

C&B: How did you build your leadership style or decision-making process? Was it natural or learned?
Alexandru Negrea: I try to be fair in all decisions with clients and collaborators, making sure no one is at a disadvantage – that’s all that guides me in my work. I don’t know how to define leadership styles, I don’t believe there’s something that clear-cut, and I think the stories described in books are overrated. I might be wrong.

C&B: What do you believe sets your business or professional approach apart from the rest of the industry?
Alexandru Negrea: The differentiating elements of the businesses I’ve been involved in have always been me and my partners, and our honest, direct way of communicating the products and services we sell. We never made unsubstantiated promises, never tried to sell at all costs, never told anyone they’d become an expert after taking a course.

C&B: What does a typical day look like for you now, and what moments bring you the most satisfaction?
Alexandru Negrea: I go to the office daily for a few hours, answer emails, meet with my colleagues, and try to find ways to keep our businesses functional without making compromises. And it’s getting harder and harder. The rest of the time, I go to clients who need consulting services, and we try to find development solutions for their businesses together.

C&B: What values or principles guide you in your work, and how do you apply them daily?
Alexandru Negrea: I like everything to be fair and beneficial for all parties involved, and I don’t like working based on vague agreements – even though both industries I’m active in have this component.

C&B: How did the idea to start your business and choose its name come about?
Alexandru Negrea: The names of both businesses I’m involved in were chosen after discussions with close people at the beginning (partners, friends, etc.). There’s no spectacular story here either – just pragmatic choices that represent what we do. This simplicity in decision-making is something I strongly believe in.

C&B: If you could send a message to those who follow your example, what would it be?
Alexandru Negrea: Never give up on your principles, because over time, decisions that go against them will frustrate you and make you dislike what you do. A professional life lived only for money, without passion, is a sure path to some states you don’t want to experience.

This interview with Alexandru Negrea offers valuable insights into how strategic communication and authentic content can build strong personal brands.

Adrian Enache, founder of Omniperform, is revolutionizing advertising with AI-driven solutions and personalized communication. Discover the story behind the innovation.

Adrian Enache is an award-winning entrepreneur and executive (Top 50 CEOs – UK Magazine, Top 40 under 40 – SEE Business Awards, Top 100 Young Managers – Business Magazine, Excellence Award for Executive and Entrepreneurial Achievements – Repatriot) with solid experience in digital transformation, media and communication, marketing, e-commerce, and investments in high-potential startups.
He has successfully led diverse teams across various industries and countries, both within large corporations and through his own ventures. Throughout his career, Adrian has accelerated the digitalization processes of the corporations he worked with and founded companies such as Omniperform, specializing in personalized communication powered by artificial intelligence.

Passionate about education and knowledge sharing, Adrian has trained over 25,000 professionals globally and has been invited to speak at hundreds of international events such as DMF Dubai, Cairo, IMWorld, and Technology Week. Currently, he is also a lecturer at NextMBA, alongside renowned figures such as Philip Kotler, Seth Godin, and other globally recognized leaders.

C&B: Adrian, how would you describe yourself in a few words?
Adrian Enache: I’m someone who seeks to explore and become the best version of himself. And if possible, to change the way things are done in the industry I’ve chosen. In the meantime, I enjoy building great teams that take pleasure in the journey of creating something innovative in advertising and marketing.

C&B: What were the key moments in your professional journey?
Adrian Enache: The key moments in my professional path include: Opening my first agency at the age of 24 in Romania, achieving growth well above the market average; Taking over and leading the investment fund and alternative financing platform Angels Den Funding, operating in the UK, Poland, and Romania; Reaching over 100 conferences and training sessions, with more than 25,000 participants in digital and media workshops; Being invited to teach alongside Philip Kotler, Seth Godin, and other international trainers at NextMBA; Launching Omniperform, into which I invested all my resources—including mortgaging my own home—to build a product based on artificial intelligence and personalized communication, dedicated to transforming the way brands connect with their audiences.

C&B: What has been the most difficult moment so far, and how did you overcome it?
Adrian Enache: One of the most difficult moments was when I had to urgently shut down the first agency I had founded — due to reasons beyond my control. It was a shock, but also a turning point. That’s when I realized that the only real solution was to take control of my future, to be much more careful about whom I choose to trust, and even if it meant risking everything, to do it in a format I truly believed in. That’s how Omniperform was born — the first advertising agency in Romania that, from day one, offered part of the company to its employees through an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan), as well as a bonus directly tied to the company’s profits.

C&B: Is there a dream or ambition that has always motivated you, regardless of obstacles?
Adrian Enache: Our ambition is rooted in the belief that advertising can be effective without being intrusive for consumers. We want brand messages to first and foremost capture attention, be relevant, and be memorable.
Our mission is to innovate and completely transform the way creativity contributes to media campaign performance — by developing solutions that deliver personalized messages tailored to each consumer type.
Personally, I believe each of us has a responsibility to try to reach our full potential in the field we choose to work in. And that journey should be guided by ambition, but also by humbleness — that kind of authentic modesty that’s hard to fully translate into Romanian, but is essential in leadership and innovation.

C&B: Looking back at the beginning of your career, what do you see?
Adrian Enache:
I believe each of us has a duty to build a personal guide — a set of values and beliefs that reflect how we think, what motivates us, and what helps us grow both personally and professionally.
Looking back at my early days as a manager and entrepreneur, I recognize that period was marked by a drive for perfection, but also important lessons about the transition from expert to manager.
Later came the challenge of becoming a leader capable of turning a group of individuals into an autonomous, motivated team aligned with a common goal.
Over time, I’ve learned that authenticity plays a crucial role in leadership style. A team immediately senses when you lead with honesty, vulnerability, and consistency in your values — and that creates real trust, not just authority.

C&B: If we were to talk to your team or collaborators, what do you think they’d say about you?
Adrian Enache: That’s a great question — in fact, it’s one we often use in our self-awareness evaluations.
I’d say my leadership style is built on motivation, constructive high standards, and trust. I want us to grow together at a sustained pace, in an environment that challenges but also inspires. I believe in leadership that offers vision and innovation, but most importantly, builds ambitious teams capable of exceeding market expectations.
I seek excellence in everything we do, and I live by a clear principle: I don’t want to be the best in the room. That’s why my goal is for every team member to become better than me, in their own way.
Collaborators choose to work with us because they trust the people, the technology, the personalization innovation, and the consistent, solid results we’ve delivered over time.

C&B: What’s the most important decision you’ve made that changed your trajectory?
Adrian Enache: I chose to completely switch industries for two years and made a sustained effort to learn a new field — financial services, equity investment, pre-seed, seed, and Series A — in under six months.
That experience matured me significantly. It pulled me out of my comfort zone — out of the industry where I was already trained and the country I lived in — and pushed me to work, lead, and collaborate with people from over 15 nationalities across the continent.
It was one of the most valuable periods of both professional and personal development.

C&B: Should a leader be authentic or adaptable?
Adrian Enache: It’s a continuous journey of evolution, grounded in learning, conscious decision-making, and discovering what authenticity in leadership really means.
I believe every leader should be authentic, should take responsibility for their team and its results, and should create a space where people can grow in a healthy, meaningful way.
True leadership doesn’t come from title or position — it comes from responsibility and genuine care for the people you’re building with.

C&B: How do you and your team stand out in the industry?
Adrian Enache: Right now, we deliver an integrated and fluid experience for consumers, through personalized communication in media campaigns and by adapting digital assets (like landing pages and websites) in real time based on consumer behavior.
This process, combined with our proprietary AI models — which generate a unique attention and result prediction algorithm — gives us a distinct market positioning: an innovative, reliable partner for brands that choose to work with us long-term.
In an industry where brands typically change agencies every 2–3 years, we have partners who have worked with Omniperform for over 8 years — a clear sign of trust and consistent value delivery.

C&B: What does a typical day look like for you, and what moments bring the most satisfaction?
Adrian Enache: A typical day for me focuses on no more than three clear objectives that can be accomplished that day, and working closely with the team to become better at what we do. In parallel, we decide what new functionalities are essential for the future of online advertising.
I believe in achievements and continuous progress — if we’re better than we were yesterday, the day was meaningful and contributed to the future of both myself and the company I lead.

C&B: What’s your set of values and principles?
Adrian Enache: Our values are applied daily and guide everything we do: Evolution – We believe in continuous personal growth, starting with a high level of self-awareness; Responsibility – We take ownership of our promises and deliver what we say, to colleagues, clients, and partners; Enjoying & having fun at work – We maintain a culture of transparency and ease, where serious work is balanced with the joy of collaboration; Teamwork – We support one another and function as a unified team, not just as individuals; Respect – We show and offer respect to everyone we work with, regardless of role or experience; Humbleness – We strive for excellence but remain aware that we always have something to learn from those around us, no matter how much we innovate.

C&B: How did the idea for this business come about, and where does the name “Omniperform” come from?
Adrian Enache: From the very start of my career in media, I felt that irrelevant advertising messages had no place — not from a professional perspective, nor as a consumer.
The idea of sending one message to an entire audience always felt wrong and ineffective to me.
So when technology finally allowed it, and I was able to launch a new company, Omniperform, I invested all my resources — including personal ones — to build a solution that could deliver personalized communication, tailored to each consumer type, both in media campaigns and on websites or conversion landing pages.
The name Omniperform came to life one weekend in London, together with my mentor (who is now also a shareholder in the company). After a few hours of intense discussion and a glass of whisky, we arrived at a formula that combined Omnichannel and Performance Marketing — perfectly reflecting what we aim to deliver: personalization at scale, with tangible results.

C&B: If you could send a message to people following your example, what would it be?
Adrian Enache: Entrepreneurship isn’t easy — but it’s worth it.
Building a team and, as a leader, seeing people grow and reach their potential because of the environment and context you’ve created is a type of fulfillment that’s hard to compare with anything else.

When trying to build and go far, you need a team.
Alone, you may go faster — but with a united team, you can build something lasting.

When I started and talked to brands about personalized communication, 9 out of 10 meetings looked at us as dreamers. For many, the idea of not sending the same message to everyone seemed crazy.
But I believed in the idea — and we kept going.
And today, nearly every brand is looking for exactly that: a personalized communication solution, because the market reality has changed and consumers now expect relevance.
That’s why I believe it’s essential to have the courage to move forward, even if you’re 3–4 years ahead of the market.
Believe in your solution before everyone else understands it.
