Airports continue to account for the largest share of sales, while ferry routes and cruise lines are gaining relevance at a fast pace. Retailers are increasingly adopting omnichannel approaches that blend physical and digital experiences, improving conversion rates. Sustainability initiatives and locally inspired assortments are also emerging as important loyalty drivers.
International tourism is expanding, with notable growth among younger visitors from India and Southeast Asia. These markets represent 61.6% of total tourism nights. The gradual recovery of outbound travel from China supports strong performance in high-spending segments through 2030.
European airports handled 10.7 million flights in 2024, reflecting a strong rebound toward pre-crisis levels. Low-cost carriers continue to gain market share, attracting budget-conscious yet digitally engaged travelers. At the same time, macroeconomic uncertainty, currency volatility, and higher energy costs continue to challenge operators’ profitability.
Perfumes and cosmetics remain the leading product category, holding a 37.88% market share in 2025. Jewelry and watches show solid growth potential, while tobacco sales decline under stricter regulation. Eco-friendly products are becoming increasingly appealing to sustainability-focused travelers.
