Insolvencies remain high at the end of 2025, exceeding 1,000 cases in December

Insolvencies remain high at the end of 2025, exceeding 1,000 cases in December

The end of 2025 was marked by a high level of insolvencies, with more than 900 cases opened in each of September, October and November, while December saw over 1,000 insolvency filings, according to data from a financial analysis platform cited by Agerpres.

“The end of 2025 signals financial challenges for companies and economic instability. December 2025 highlights increased financial pressure on the business environment, reflected in more than 1,000 insolvency cases,” according to an analysis by RisCo.

Bucharest recorded the highest number of insolvencies, with 255 cases opened in December 2025 alone. Compared to December 2024, when 172 cases were registered, the capital posted a 48% increase. Significant rises were also reported in Ialomița (+260%), Constanța (+219%), Brașov (+146%), Bihor (+132%) and Iași (+100%).

Most affected sectors

According to the RisCo analysis, restaurants saw one of the sharpest increases in insolvencies in December 2025 (+150%), alongside electrical and plumbing installation works (+150%). Road freight transport and moving services recorded a 133% rise, followed by non-specialised retail trade (+110%) and residential and non-residential construction works (around +91%).

By contrast, Botoșani, Mureș, Buzău and Harghita counties reported fewer insolvency cases compared to the same period of the previous year.

Overall, data published by Romania’s National Trade Register Office show that 6,507 companies and sole traders entered insolvency in the first 11 months of 2025, a slight decrease of 0.15% compared with the same period in 2024.
