Over 100 small suppliers already listed in stores across 13 cities
Carrefour has announced the expansion of its collaboration with ultra-local Romanian producers, increasing the number of domestic products available on its shelves, while officially denying market speculation about a possible exit from Romania.
The “De aici, de aproape” initiative, first launched in Piatra Neamț and Roman, now includes more than 100 ultra-local producers, whose products are listed in 30 Carrefour stores across 13 locations. Nationwide, the retailer already works with a network of over 1,000 food producers located within a 50-kilometre radius of its stores.

The expanded program targets small producers and artisans with limited staff, operating close to the stores they supply. These producers often face barriers when trying to access large retail chains due to scale and administrative constraints.
“We strongly believe that small producers are a vital part of the local economy, which is why we developed this project, identified local suppliers and created a collaboration framework tailored to their size and capacity. With this expansion, we surpassed 100 new suppliers listed in our stores in just a few weeks, and the number will grow significantly once the project is rolled out nationwide,” said Gilles Ballot, CEO of Carrefour Romania.
The project is already active in 13 Romanian cities, including Piatra Neamț, Roman, Satu Mare, Botoșani, Sibiu, Târgu Jiu, Focșani, Oradea, Cluj, Iași, Florești, Mediaș and Timișoara. The ultra-local producers supply more than 1,400 products, ranging from grocery items and bakery goods to cured meats, dairy products and artisanal beverages, supporting a shorter and more sustainable supply chain.
