Nvidia enters weather forecasting with Earth-2, an AI platform for faster predictions

Nvidia, the chip giant leading the AI race, announced the launch of Earth-2, a platform combining open-source software and AI models designed to deliver faster and more accurate weather forecasts, including nowcasting, according to Mediafax.

Launched on January 26, 2026, Earth-2 enables governments and companies to build their own forecasting systems using large datasets and AI. The platform includes two AI-based weather models that generate forecasts up to two weeks ahead and short-term estimates that can flag severe weather up to six hours in advance.

A core feature is a data assimilation model that rapidly computes atmospheric “initial conditions” – temperature, wind, and pressure – the foundation of any customized forecast. Nvidia says this approach lowers technical barriers and streamlines AI adoption.

Open-source design and data control

AI models increasingly complement traditional supercomputer-based forecasting by spotting patterns in massive atmospheric datasets. Nvidia claims its models rival those from government agencies and DeepMind, combining accessibility, speed, and easier integration.

Earth-2 targets weather-sensitive sectors such as energy trading, shipping, insurance, and agriculture, while allowing organizations to keep full control of their data. Its open-source nature enables flexible customization to specific needs.
