ZF Friedrichshafen AG and BMW Group have signed a long-term agreement covering the supply and ongoing development of powertrain systems for passenger cars. At the core of the partnership lies ZF’s well-known 8HP eight-speed automatic transmission.
The multi-billion-euro contract runs until the late 2030s, providing both companies with long-term planning security. According to the partners, the agreement supports a future mobility approach built on open technologies and lower emissions.
“Together with BMW, we are sending a strong signal in favor of innovation, efficiency, and sustainability at a time of rapid industry change,” said ZF CEO Mathias Miedreich. “The agreement highlights the strategic importance of our 8-speed automatic transmission as a key technology in powertrain transformation.”

Continuous development of the 8HP transmission
As part of the partnership, the 8HP transmission kit will undergo continuous development to meet future powertrain requirements in terms of performance, efficiency, and long-term viability. Sebastian Schmitt, Head of Electrified Drive Technologies at ZF, explained that the deal brings stability and enables both companies to align the next generation of the 8HP transmission with long-term technological goals.
The closer cooperation is expected to reduce risks in a rapidly changing market environment and to support the transition toward low-emission mobility.
