Victor Balaniuc, co-founder of CODRU Festival, shares how he turned a cultural dream into an ecological movement that unites music, art, and community under the spirit of sustainability.
Victor Balaniuc, Co-Founder and General Manager of CODRU Festival, is a visionary leader who has transformed his passion for events, music, and community into one of Romania’s most important cultural and ecological projects.
C&B: How would you describe yourself in one sentence to intrigue those who don’t know you yet?
Victor Balaniuc: I am a persevering entrepreneur who turns bold ideas into cultural movements with international impact, believing deeply in the power of teamwork and community—and most of all, in the force of culture when it serves nature and people.
C&B: If we were to follow the narrative thread of your career or business, what key moments have defined you?
Victor Balaniuc: For me, key moments were not only the successes but also the failures, because I understood that every difficulty brings a new opportunity. It all started in high school when I organized my first parties, proms, and events, driven purely by a passion for people and music. Later, I founded Front Row Events, through which we brought Romanian stand-up comedy to 13 European countries, offering Romanians abroad authentic entertainment experiences. The pandemic abruptly halted that project, and although it was a tough moment, it became a turning point that pushed me to rethink my direction. That’s how CODRU Festival was born—a project that has grown year after year to become one of the most appreciated festivals in Romania and Europe, twice a Top 10 finalist in the European Festival Awards, medium-size category. However, CODRU is not only about music and culture—it’s about social and ecological impact, through our mission: for every ticket purchased, we plant a tree.
C&B: What was the first major challenge you faced when founding the festival?
Victor Balaniuc: The biggest challenge at the beginning was convincing people that a festival can be more than music and fun. We started with a bold idea—to unite artists, community, and nature under one concept. Many were skeptical of this vision, especially when we talked about tree planting and social impact in the context of a music festival. Moreover, we started without significant resources or an experienced team—but with immense passion and determination. Through perseverance, groundwork, and continuous dialogue, we gained the trust of the public, partners, and the local community. Today, the challenge is no longer to prove that the project makes sense, but to live up to the high expectations set by the success of the first editions—and we do that with joy and enthusiasm for what lies ahead.

C&B: Is there a dream or ambition that has always guided you, regardless of obstacles?
Victor Balaniuc: Yes, I’ve always been guided by one dream—the desire to build great projects for people and alongside people. Obstacles have been just milestones along the way, but my driving force has always been the same: to build one of the most important entertainment projects in Europe, to leave behind a CODRU forest and a united community—the community of people of CODRU. Music, art, and culture are not just forms of entertainment—they are tools to inspire, educate, and bring people together. I started with a bold dream: that a festival can be more than an event—it can become a movement, a voice for nature, and a space for community. Today, CODRU Festival embodies that dream, but for me, it’s just the beginning. I want to build projects that endure across generations and show that when people unite around shared values, they can change the world.
C&B: How did you look at the beginning of your journey, and how do you feel you’ve evolved since then?
Victor Balaniuc: In the beginning, I was a dreamer full of energy, eager to bring people together through events, but perhaps less organized and unaware of how complex this journey would be. I started with passion and enthusiasm but quickly learned that passion alone is not enough to build something lasting. Every mistake and obstacle became a formative lesson.
Today, I’m much more balanced. I let my creativity flourish, but I rely on strategy, planning, and an extraordinary team that shares the same values. If at first, I only dreamed of hosting successful events, now I understand that every decision I make has a long-term impact on people. I’ve evolved from an enthusiastic young man into a leader who looks beyond the present and builds truly meaningful projects for people and with people. This evolution taught me that success isn’t measured by applause at the end of a concert, but by the legacy you leave in the community and in nature.
C&B: If we were to talk to your team or collaborators, what do you think they would say about you?
Victor Balaniuc: I think my team would say that I’m an ambitious leader, but also a colleague they can always rely on. They’d probably mention that I’m perseverant, and that when I set my mind to something, I don’t stop until it’s done. They’ve likely noticed that I tend to push limits and expect more because I want us to reach the highest standards together. I always try to transmit energy, confidence, and motivation—to inspire them to think boldly and go beyond our limits as a team.
At the same time, I believe they’d say I’m close to them, that I know how to listen, and that I’m present not only in big decisions but also on the ground in tough moments. I see them as part of a family, not just colleagues, and that sense of unity has helped us overcome the inevitable challenges of our journey. Everything we’ve built is the result of this mix of perseverance, high standards, and community spirit.
C&B: What’s the most important decision you’ve made that changed your trajectory?
Victor Balaniuc: The most important decision I made was to have the courage to launch CODRU Festival at a time when it seemed almost impossible. I came out of a pandemic that had stopped all events, financial resources were limited, and many viewed the idea of a festival built around nature and community with skepticism. Still, I chose to move forward—and more than that, to turn CODRU into a long-term impact project, not just a summer festival.
From the very beginning, we decided to integrate tree planting, education, and community involvement as defining elements. From that moment, CODRU became something else—not just a music festival, but a heartfelt brand and a sustainability landmark. That decision changed not only our trajectory but also our identity because it showed us that we could build a cultural and ecological movement recognized both in Romania and across Europe.
C&B: What lessons have you learned as an entrepreneur involved in environmental protection and local communities?
Victor Balaniuc: As an entrepreneur involved in protecting the environment and local communities, I’ve learned that change comes step by step. You can’t save the world overnight, but you can do something today that matters for tomorrow. I understood that people need meaningful projects—ones that offer not just entertainment or experiences, but also a higher purpose. That’s why the simple idea of planting one tree for every ticket sold transformed CODRU into a movement where the audience isn’t just a spectator, but an active participant.
I also learned that education is key: people truly get involved only when they clearly understand what’s being asked of them and what they gain in return. And this process doesn’t happen overnight—it requires patience, consistency, and constant dialogue with the community.
Perhaps the most valuable lesson is that nature doesn’t need us—we need it. If we protect the forest, we protect our future. Sustainability isn’t a trend or a label; it’s a daily responsibility. Every decision—from logistics to partnerships to communication—has an impact. My simple lesson is this: if you want to build something that lasts, you must think long-term and put people at the heart of the story.
C&B: What is CODRU’s main mission, and what differentiates it from other ecological initiatives in Romania?
Victor Balaniuc: CODRU’s main mission is to unite music, art, and nature to generate awareness and real action. We started from the belief that a festival can be more than music and entertainment—it can be a platform where people connect with each other, with nature, and with the values of community. At CODRU, people come for the music and stay for the values.
What sets us apart from other ecological initiatives in Romania is that we are not just a festival with a green component, nor just a tree-planting campaign. We are a movement that combines music, art, education, and ecological action into one concept. A ticket to CODRU also means a tree planted—creating a direct link between joy and responsibility, between the emotion felt in front of the stage and the positive impact left on the environment.
While many projects stop at the level of awareness, we turn every edition into a concrete step toward sustainability. That’s what makes CODRU more than a festival—it’s a community, a platform of values, and a model of cultural and ecological responsibility.

C&B: What does a typical day look like for you now, and what moments bring you the most satisfaction?
Victor Balaniuc: A typical day for me is a constant mix of meetings, phone calls, WhatsApp messages, and plans that need to connect seamlessly. No two days are alike—and that’s what I love. The dynamism and energy of the team keep me motivated and engaged. I usually start my day with a workout, then review ongoing projects, and afterward dive into a fast-paced rhythm of strategic discussions, partner collaborations, and creative sessions for upcoming initiatives.
Although my schedule is packed and sometimes chaotic, satisfaction comes when I see the tangible results of our work. When we grab shovels and plant trees in Ianova, when at “Ziua Puilor de CODRU” I see hundreds of children with painted faces and big smiles, or when, during the festival, tens of thousands of people dance and feel they’re part of something bigger than themselves—that’s when I know all the stress and effort were worth it.
These moments are my daily fuel—they remind me that what we do is not just office work, but a collective effort that changes communities, educates generations, and leaves visible marks in nature and in people’s hearts.
C&B: What values or principles guide what you do, and how do you apply them daily?
Victor Balaniuc: The values that guide me in everything I do are authenticity, perseverance, respect for people, and responsibility toward nature. I believe that without authenticity, you can’t build something that lasts. People immediately sense whether what you do is real or just an image exercise. Perseverance and stoicism are my engine, because in entrepreneurship, obstacles are inevitable—but what makes the difference is the ability to keep going despite them.
Respect for people translates into how I treat my team, partners, and community: I listen, I give them trust, and I show them they’re part of a family, not just a project. Equally important is respect for time—mine and others’.
Responsibility toward nature is the core principle of CODRU. Every ticket that turns into a planted tree is a daily exercise in consistency—a reminder that fun and sustainability can go hand in hand. Every day, I try to apply these values through both small and big decisions—from how I communicate with people to how we choose our partners and projects.
C&B: How did CODRU originate, and what inspired you to launch a project focused on sustainability and nature?
Victor Balaniuc: CODRU started very organically, as a festival among friends. In the beginning, we were just a handful of people sharing the same principles and the same desire to create a space where culture and nature could grow together. The first edition felt more like a gathering of friends—everyone knew everyone, the energy was warm and genuine—but soon, more people joined who felt the same “we think alike” vibe. That’s when we realized we weren’t alone, and that there was a much larger community eager to get involved.
The inspiration came from the desire to show that nature isn’t just a backdrop for events. Nature is the main stage, and we, humans, have the responsibility to take care of it. That’s why, from the very first edition, we introduced the tree-planting component: for every ticket sold, we plant a tree. This became our signature—a direct link between joy and responsibility.
Thus, CODRU was born from friendship, passion, and respect for nature—and it evolved into a cultural and ecological movement where music, art, and community grow together with the forest.
C&B: What are CODRU’s development plans for the coming years?
Victor Balaniuc: Our plans for the next few years are ambitious. We want to strengthen CODRU as an international festival—a major cultural hub in western Romania and a landmark on Europe’s festival map. We aim to bring in more renowned artists, but at the same time, we remain committed to our defining cause: protecting nature and engaging the community.
We will continue our planting campaigns and take them to the next level through permanent reforestation projects and educational programs for children and young people. In parallel, we’ll expand community involvement through creative initiatives that blend art, education, and ecology.
Our vision is that, in a few years, CODRU will not be seen merely as a festival, but as a model of sustainability and cultural responsibility for Romania and Europe alike. We want every edition to leave behind not only beautiful memories but also tangible results—new forests, stronger communities, and a clear example that art and nature can grow together.
Victor’s example shows that every dream can take root when nurtured with perseverance and belief.
