Apple selects Google’s Gemini to power AI-based Siri launching this year

Long-term partnership reshapes Apple’s AI strategy

Apple is teaming up with Google to power its upcoming artificial intelligence features, including a new version of Siri set to launch later this year, according to CNBC, cited by Economedia.

The multi-year partnership will rely on Gemini models and Google’s cloud technology to support Apple’s future Foundation Models, CNBC reported, citing an official statement.

“After careful evaluation, we concluded that Google’s technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models, and we are excited about the innovative experiences this will deliver to our users,” Apple said.

The announcement follows an August Bloomberg report which revealed that Apple had entered early-stage talks with Google to use a customized Gemini model for a revamped Siri. The move signals a more decisive step into AI for Apple, which has largely stayed on the sidelines of the AI investment wave sparked by the launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI in late 2022.

While companies such as Amazon, Meta Platforms and Microsoft continue to pour billions into AI-driven products, Apple’s collaboration with Google positions the company more firmly within this competitive landscape.

Following the news, shares saw a slight decline, as Google’s market capitalization briefly surpassed Apple’s last week for the first time since 2019, reaching over $4 trillion.
