Technology to debut on a new electric vehicle platform
Ford Motor said it will introduce Level 3 driver assistance systems in 2028, allowing drivers to take both their hands off the wheel and their eyes off the road under certain conditions, mainly on highways, according to Reuters.
The company said the technology will initially be available on a new Ford electric vehicle platform developed by a specialized team in California, with plans to roll it out to additional models later on.

The first vehicle built on this platform will be a mid-size electric pickup scheduled for launch in 2027, with a target price of around $30,000. The model will feature advanced software systems that are not currently available on other Ford vehicles.
Ford aims to develop these driver assistance systems in-house, reducing its reliance on suppliers. The strategy is designed to lower costs, deliver software updates to customers more quickly and improve quality, an area that has been a recurring challenge for the automaker.
Based in Dearborn, Ford sees this approach as key to advancing automated driving capabilities and remaining competitive in the rapidly evolving mobility market.
