IKEA Romania, in partnership with District 1 City Hall, has launched a pilot project to collect used furniture and donate functional items to disadvantaged communities. The campaign runs from February 1 to April 30, 2026, at the IKEA Băneasa store, where participants can receive a 25 lei voucher for each item handed in.
The initiative primarily targets District 1 residents but is open to all Bucharest citizens. Each person can submit up to five furniture items. Accepted pieces include assembled and functional chairs, tables, sofas, wardrobes, and office furniture, which will be donated through partner NGOs. IKEA Family members receive a physical 25 lei voucher per item, up to five vouchers.

“We offer everyone who brings furniture to IKEA stores a voucher as a token of appreciation and to encourage higher collection rates. The project gives used furniture a second life while supporting people in need,” said Mihai Boian, Market Manager of IKEA Băneasa.
How the collection works and why it matters
In District 1, bulky waste accounts for around 34% of municipal waste, with about 300 tonnes collected annually. The project aims to improve waste management and deliver environmental benefits.
“This pilot project helps us manage bulky waste more efficiently and support vulnerable communities. The partnership with IKEA shows how cooperation between local authorities and the private sector can generate real benefits,” said George Tuță, Mayor of District 1.
Furniture can be dropped off at a dedicated area in the IKEA Băneasa parking lot, from Wednesday to Sunday, between 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm. An IKEA Family card is required to receive vouchers, which can be used until May 31, 2026, and deducted from the final purchase total.
