PPC Renewables Romania to implement 60 MWh battery storage system at Sălbatica 1 wind farm

Investment partially funded through the Modernisation Fund

PPC Renewables România has announced the development of a 60.12 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Sălbatica 1 wind farm, according to Forbes. The total investment amounts to 68.23 million lei, partially financed through the Modernisation Fund.

The project is located in the South-East region, Valea Nucarilor, Tulcea county, and aims to enhance storage capacity within Romania’s energy system. The Sălbatica 1 and Sălbatica 2 wind farms comprise 70 turbines of 2 MW each.

The BESS installation will store electricity generated during peak production periods and supply it when demand rises or weather conditions reduce output, improving grid stability and efficiency.

In addition to the storage facility, the investment includes access roads, fencing, safety lighting, monitoring systems and dedicated areas for operation and maintenance.

The Modernisation Fund will cover up to 28.24% of eligible costs, approximately 9.87 million lei, with the remaining 58.35 million lei financed by the company.

The project forms part of the broader renewable expansion strategy of Public Power Corporation (PPC), which operates across Romania, Greece, Italy and Bulgaria and aims to increase installed capacity to 12.7 GW by 2028.
