Alibaba launches RynnBrain AI model, entering the global robotics race

DAMO Academy develops new “physical AI” platform

Chinese technology giant Alibaba has unveiled RynnBrain, a new artificial intelligence model designed for robots, according to reports from Bloomberg and Yahoo! Finance. The model enables robots to perceive their environment and recognize objects, marking Alibaba’s entry into the emerging “physical AI” segment.

RynnBrain was developed by DAMO Academy, Alibaba’s research arm. Physical AI refers to artificial intelligence systems that interact directly with the real world, including humanoid robots, autonomous vehicles and intelligent industrial systems.

China has been investing heavily in this sector amid growing technological competition with the United States. Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, previously estimated that the robotics market could reach billions of dollars in the coming years.

For Alibaba, RynnBrain expands the Qwen model ecosystem and strengthens the company’s strategic positioning in robotics. The model will be released as open source, giving developers worldwide free access and encouraging rapid adoption across industrial and consumer applications.

Globally, competition is intensifying. Nvidia, Google DeepMind and Tesla, through its Optimus project, are developing similar robotic AI systems. China is already considered a leader in humanoid robotics, with local firms planning production expansion in 2026.
