The restructuring could also affect the company’s commercial hub in Bucharest, bringing the total number of employees leaving the company in Romania to more than 270.

BAT currently employs around 1,800 people in Romania.

The layoffs at the Ploiești facility were confirmed by Cristina Stoichici, executive director of the Prahova County Employment Agency. According to her, British American Tobacco Romania Investment SRL, the company operating the factory, notified authorities about the collective dismissal in February 2026.

Financial performance in Romania

BAT’s commercial division in Bucharest, employing around 850 people, reported revenue of 4.8 billion lei and net profit of 186 million lei, representing a 7.1% increase compared with the previous year.

In a public statement, the company said the restructuring is part of a broader process aimed at adapting to evolving market conditions.

BAT emphasized that Romania remains an important market for the group, which has been present in the country for nearly 30 years and is among the largest foreign investors.

According to the company, the changes are intended to streamline the organization, implement more efficient working methods and support long-term sustainable growth.
