OpenAI plans to double its number of employees by the end of 2026, targeting around 8,000 employees, up from approximately 4,500 currently, according to Financial Times, cited by Economedia.
Rapid expansion and product focus
The hiring plan targets key areas such as engineering, research, product development, and sales. At the same time, the company is introducing new roles, including “technical ambassadors,” aimed at helping businesses better use AI tools.

OpenAI has also leased additional office space in San Francisco, reaching a total footprint of approximately 93,000 square meters, with hiring potentially reaching 12 employees per day.
Competitive pressure and enterprise strategy
The expansion comes amid growing competition from Anthropic, which is gaining traction in the enterprise segment. Data analyzed by Ramp suggests that companies choose Anthropic three times more often than OpenAI for initial AI adoption, although OpenAI disputes the relevance of these findings.
Monetization and challenges
Although ChatGPT has over 900 million active users, more than 90% are non-paying, putting pressure on the company’s business model.
OpenAI is exploring new revenue streams, including enterprise products, advertising, video models, and hardware development.
CEO Sam Altman has urged teams to refocus on the core product, while leadership has emphasized the development of Codex and the attraction of enterprise clients.
Strategic direction
OpenAI estimates that by the end of the year, around 50% of its revenue will come from enterprise clients, up from about 40% currently, as the company seeks to strengthen its position across both consumer and enterprise markets.
