PPC Group has finalized the construction of Europe’s largest photovoltaic project cluster, strengthening Greece’s position as a regional green energy hub. The project reaches a total capacity of 2,130 MW, with an estimated annual production of 3,150 GWh, covering nearly 6% of the country’s electricity demand.
Powering hundreds of thousands of homes
The installations can supply energy to approximately 750,000 households, while preventing over 1.5 million tons of CO₂ emissions annually. The projects are located in northern Greece, in areas such as Amyntaio and Ptolemaida, repurposing former lignite mining sites.

Key developments include:
– the “Phoebe” plant (550 MW)
– the Amyntaio complex (940 MW), developed with RWE
– “Helios Velos 1”, “Exochi 7” and “Akrini” projects
Energy storage as the next step
To ensure grid stability, PPC Renewables is expanding storage capacity. Two BESS units (98 MW / 196 MWh) are already operational, with another under construction.
Additionally, two major pumped-storage projects are planned, with capacities of 320 MW and 240 MW, using former mining infrastructure.
A shift in the energy mix
The project highlights Greece’s rapid transition, with thermal energy’s share dropping from 67% to 50% in under seven years. Western Macedonia is emerging as a key renewable energy hub in Southeast Europe.
