Amazon in talks to acquire Globalstar in bid to compete with Starlink

Amazon is in discussions to acquire Globalstar in a deal valued at around $9 billion, according to Financial Times. The move would strengthen its position against SpaceX and its satellite internet service, Starlink.

Apple stake complicates negotiations

Talks are ongoing, with a key challenge being the 20% stake held by Apple in Globalstar, requiring additional negotiations.

In 2024, Apple invested $1.5 billion in Globalstar, securing access to around 85% of the network’s capacity for satellite messaging services.

Sources warn that no deal has been finalized and discussions could still change or collapse.

Globalstar draws investor attention

Founded in 1991, Globalstar has become a target for acquisition as demand for low Earth orbit satellite networks grows. Its market capitalization has reached approximately $9 billion, with shares rising about 230% over the past year.

According to Bloomberg, the company previously explored a sale and held preliminary talks with SpaceX.

Satellite internet race intensifies

The potential acquisition would support Amazon in expanding its own low Earth orbit satellite network. The company currently has over 180 satellites in orbit as part of its initiative.

However, it still trails SpaceX, which operates more than 10,000 active satellites through Starlink.
