Vanessa Lana Brown: The evolution of an entrepreneur in the aesthetics industry, from family business transformation to global innovations in laser therapy

Vanessa Lana Brown, the Managing Director of VL Aesthetics, is a dynamic entrepreneur who took the reins of her family business at the age of 21, orchestrating a remarkable transformation within 12 months into a thriving £500k per annum enterprise specializing in non-invasive face, body, and laser treatments. At the age of 25, Vanessa became the UK Sales and Operations Manager for World Leaders in Low Level Laser Therapy, Erchonia and has since launched the game changing, non invasive, Emerald Laser by Erchonia into the UK.

C&B: Provide a description or define your business activity!

Vanessa Lana Brown: I own a multi award winning Face, Body and Laser clinic called VL Aesthetics in Carlisle, Cumbria. It is a CQC-registered business that stands at the forefront of the beauty and aesthetics industry. With a team of 10 skilled medics and non-medics, we specialize in delivering cutting-edge non-invasive treatments to enhance both face and body aesthetics.

In May 2021, I stepped out of the day to day running of the business and joined an American company, world leaders in Low Level Laser Therapy to become their UK Sales and Operations Manager. Since then, we have successfully launched the Emerald Laser by Erchonia into the UK marketplace – winning two awards and two year since the launch we now have over 30 UK clinics on board, utilising this technology. My role has since changed and I am stepping into becoming EMEA Sales and Operations Manager – replicating our UK success in international markets.

C&B: What is the story of the evolution of your business?

Vanessa Lana Brown: My journey with VL Aesthetics began at the age of 21 when I assumed leadership, swiftly turning the family business into a half-million-pound venture. The company’s evolution has been marked by a commitment to excellence, innovation, and the delivery of top-tier aesthetic treatments.

C&B: What were your visions in childhood/adolescence, and what are they now?

Vanessa Lana Brown: From a young age, I have naturally harboured entrepreneurial aspirations, starting my first online business venture at 10, and later graduating with a Master of Arts in International Business Management from Heriot-Watt University. Today, my childhood visions have evolved into a passion for driving innovation in the aesthetics industry.

C&B: What are the life and business principles you adhere to, and what is their explanation?

Vanessa Lana Brown: I consistently adhere to principles of integrity, customer satisfaction, and continuous improvement by surrounding myself with leaders in the industry and learning from them. These principles underpin not only my businesses success but also my personal career growth. It has enabled me to build lasting relatinships contributing to community well-being.

C&B: How have the pandemic, economic crises, and wars influenced/influence your business?

Vanessa Lana Brown: Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, economic crises, and wars, VL Aesthetics has embraced change, leveraging technology and strategic partnerships to navigate successfully. The business remains resilient, adapting to the evolving landscape of the industry.

With Erchonia, we have managed to be at the forefront of the changes in the industry. As the industry moves more towards holistic wellbeing treatments, our range of lasers stand as the leader when it comes to evidence-based treatments for longevity and optimising human health.

C&B: Share some amusing situations from your business activities!

Vanessa Lana Brown: I started my entrepreneurial journey at 10, writing to soap stars and selling their autographs on eBay! I would make between £20-£30 per autograph.

C&B: You’re face to face with a potential client or partner. What is the sentence that convinces them?

Vanessa Lana Brown: I bring not just expertise but a passion for transformative aesthetic solutions. With a proven track record of turning a family business into a £500k per annum success story, we not only provide top-tier non-invasive treatments but also establish enduring partnerships.

C&B: What advice/tips do you have for those just starting out or undecided?

Vanessa Lana Brown: Prioritise learning, adaptability, and building genuine relationships with leaders in the industry. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.

C&B: What are your perceptions of society and its evolution?

Vanessa Lana Brown: I think society is constantly evolving, and both at VL Aesthetics and Erchonia, we aim to contribute positively by fostering inclusivity, sustainability, and technological advancements. Staying attuned to societal changes is key to meaningful contributions to progress.
