Anthropic gains ground on OpenAI as enterprise AI adoption accelerates

AI company Anthropic is strengthening its position against OpenAI, as enterprise adoption of its tools rises while its rival’s growth shows signs of stabilizing. The information was reported by Financial Times and cited by Economedia.

Data from Ramp shows that nearly one in three US companies paid for Anthropic’s tools in March, marking a 6% month-over-month increase.

OpenAI holds the lead but growth slows

OpenAI still leads in enterprise adoption in the US, with a 35% usage rate, but this figure has remained flat.

Globally, the company reports 900 million weekly active users, with just over 5% paying for services.

Meanwhile, Sensor Tower data shows ChatGPT downloads grew by 5%, while Anthropic’s Claude chatbot tripled downloads to 21 million.

According to Apptopia, ChatGPT weekly active users in the US declined month-over-month in March for the first time since early 2024. OpenAI disputes these figures.

Different strategies drive divergence

Anthropic’s growth is fueled by products like Claude Code and enterprise-focused automation tools.

“Data shows a clear momentum shift in favor of Anthropic,” said Charlie Dai.

Rapid growth and strategic shifts

Anthropic reported reaching $30 billion in annual revenue, up from $9 billion at the end of 2025.

At the same time, OpenAI is restructuring its leadership and focusing on core products ahead of a potential IPO, including shutting down its Sora video platform.
