Brașov could become the first major Romanian city to implement a metropolitan train before the capital. Project documentation is expected to be finalized next month, while funding approval and procurement procedures should follow by mid-year, according to George Cornea, director of the Brașov Transport Association, in a statement to Agerpres.
Three approvals are still required to complete the Feasibility Study: from the Regional Commission for Historical Monuments, the Environmental Agency and the Romanian Civil Aeronautical Authority. Once obtained, the documentation will be submitted to the Government to secure European funding and launch procurement procedures.
A similar metropolitan train project has been repeatedly discussed for București, but implementation has been delayed.

Airport connection and €230 million investment
A key component of the project involves building approximately 3 kilometers of new railway infrastructure in the north-western area of the city to connect Brașov with the Ghimbav Airport. An overpass will also be constructed on Institutului Street.
The new line will include stations at the Airport, the Ghimbav Industrial Park, near the Ina Shefler factory and at the end of Independenței Street, where the CFR lines split toward Sighișoara and Sibiu. Another station will be arranged on the existing southern infrastructure in the Micșunica area.
The total investment is estimated at €230 million, with around €80 million allocated for rolling stock acquisition. Authorities plan to purchase seven battery-electric trains, each costing approximately €11 million.
The project also includes platform rehabilitation, canopy installation and upgrades of several level crossings. Completion is expected between 2029 and 2030.
