French startup Mistral to invest €1.2 billion in AI data centres in Sweden

Europe steps up efforts to build technological sovereignty

Mistral AI announced it will invest €1.2 billion in digital infrastructure in Sweden, according to CNBC, cited by Mediafax. The move comes as Europe accelerates efforts to develop the infrastructure needed to power rapidly evolving artificial intelligence tools.

The investment will support the development of AI-focused data centres, advanced computing capacity and broader AI capabilities. It forms part of a wider European strategy aimed at strengthening technological sovereignty amid rising geopolitical tensions.

“This investment is a concrete step toward building independent AI capabilities in Europe. By delivering a fully vertical offering, with data processed and stored locally, we strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy and competitiveness. This lays the foundations for a European AI cloud capable of serving industries, public institutions and researchers at scale,” said Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral.

Founded in 2023, Mistral has quickly become one of Europe’s leading AI companies. In September, it raised €1.7 billion, reaching a valuation of €11.7 billion.

Its investors include ASML, Nvidia, Microsoft, as well as venture funds such as DST Global, Andreessen Horowitz, Bpifrance, General Catalyst and Index Ventures.

Nordic countries are seen as prime locations for AI facilities in Europe due to cooler climates and comparatively lower energy costs.
