Pavăl brothers enter exclusive talks to acquire Carrefour Romania in €823m deal

Strategic review leads to potential change of ownership

Pavăl Holding, the investment vehicle of the Pavăl brothers, owners of Dedeman, has entered exclusive negotiations to acquire Carrefour România. The talks are part of the strategic review launched by Carrefour in early 2025.

The French retailer had previously denied plans to sell its Romanian operations. The transaction is based on an estimated valuation of around €823 million.

“We have always followed with interest the business model developed by Carrefour. The idea of bringing together an extensive product offering in one place has been an important benchmark for us and inspired how we developed Dedeman. At the same time, Carrefour Romania has paved the way in working with local producers, promoting the authenticity of Romanian products. It is a philosophy we fully share because a healthy business grows alongside the community that supports it,” said Dragoș Pavăl, President of Pavăl Holding and Dedeman.

He added: “We move forward with confidence, knowing that Carrefour Romania’s team brings together experienced professionals and well-established internal processes. This team represents the foundation on which we will continue to build, strengthen local partnerships and provide customers with a modern, efficient shopping experience tailored to their needs.”

Carrefour Romania operates a multi-format network of 478 stores, including 55 hypermarkets, 191 supermarkets, 202 convenience stores and 30 discount outlets. The company reported gross sales (TTC) of around €3.2 billion in 2024 and estimated 2025, representing approximately 3.5% of the group’s total sales.

Completion of the deal is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected in the second half of 2026.
