Urban retail strategy
The new location is part of the company’s strategy to expand through store formats tailored for high-traffic shopping centers, designed to match urban consumer behavior and improve accessibility to sports equipment.
Decathlon currently operates stores in 27 cities across Romania, with store sizes ranging from 750 to 4,500 square meters, depending on local market characteristics.
The Plaza România store will offer equipment for sports such as cycling, running, fitness, swimming, football and mountain sports, focusing on a convenient shopping experience for urban consumers.
Growing interest in sports
For 2026, Decathlon expects demand for sports products to increase. Emerging trends include padel, road cycling, trail running, e-MTB cycling and pickleball.
Although consumers are becoming more cautious with spending, the retailer notes that interest in sports and active lifestyles continues to grow.
Decathlon’s presence in Romania
Decathlon has been present in Romania since 2009, operating 31 stores, along with an online platform and mobile application, and employing around 1,600 people.
The company offers products from its own brands, including Quechua, Rockrider, Van Rysel, Domyos, Tribord, Kiprun and Solognac, as well as other international brands.
