The European Commission has launched the “Women in Agriculture” platform, a new initiative aimed at empowering women in the agricultural sector and promoting equal opportunities in rural communities, according to information reported by Forbes.
The initiative comes as women remain underrepresented in agriculture across the European Union, currently managing only 32% of farms in the EU. According to the Commission, persistent barriers such as unequal access to land, financing and training continue to limit their potential.
Mentorship and professional networks
A key element of the platform is a mentorship program designed to facilitate knowledge exchange and practical support among women working in agriculture. By building a mentorship network, the initiative aims to challenge stereotypes, inspire young women and promote female leadership in the agricultural sector.
The program also seeks to strengthen confidence among women farmers, improve their access to opportunities and ensure their contributions to agriculture are more widely recognized.
Policy support through EU agriculture programs
Within the framework of the EU’s agricultural policy, member states can introduce specific measures to support women farmers, including targeted financial incentives. At the same time, the European Commission is improving data collection to better integrate gender considerations into policy development.
According to official figures, more than 55,300 young women received support in 2024 to establish agricultural businesses and access additional income support schemes.
Through this initiative, the European Commission aims to help shape a more inclusive and forward-looking agricultural sector across Europe.
